During past months these articles have also discussed the rampant outbreak of red tide along Florida’s Gulf Coast and that phenomenon’s health and economic impact, such as respiratory irritation and fish kills.5 (This particular article is not addressing the parallel algae blooms.) While it appeared that red tide had subsided 6, “It’s baack…”7
It was reported by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission that as of October 4, 2019 8:
The red tide organism, Karenia brevis, was observed at bloom concentrations in Southwest Florida and at background concentrations in Northwest Florida over the past week. Additional details are provided below.
- In Southwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background concentrations offshore of Pinellas County, background concentrations offshore of Hillsborough County, very low to low concentrations in and/or offshore of Lee County, and background to high concentrations in and/or offshore of Collier County. For additional information, view the Southwest Coast report and map.
- In Northwest Florida over the past week, K. brevis was observed at background concentrations in Okaloosa and Gulf counties. For additional information, view the Northwest Coast report and map.
- Along the Florida East Coast over the past week, K. brevis was not observed. For additional information, view the East Coast report and map.
