In that regard, it is noted (see the section title above) that ‘we’ are now currently in National Cybersecurity Month. The following is a brief description of the Month on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security:

Held every October, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) is a collaborative effort between government and industry to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and to ensure that all Americans have the resources they need to be safer and more secure online.

NCSAM 2019 emphasizes personal accountability and stresses the importance of taking proactive steps to enhance cybersecurity at home and in the workplace. This year’s overarching message – Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT. – will focus on key areas including citizen privacy, consumer devices, and e-commerce security.

Florida CFO Patronis weighed-in on National Cybersecurity Awareness Month in a detailed and useful press release.2

#2 – Approximately 90,000 Florida homeowners who maintained policies with the Florida Specialty Insurance Company will immediately need to replace their policies.3  Meaning before the end of October.

The Florida Department of Financial Services – Division of Rehabilitation and Liquidation explains the FSIC situation as follows:

Liquidation of Florida Specialty Insurance Company

Effective October 2, 2019, Florida Specialty Insurance Company (“FSIC”) was ordered into receivership for purposes of liquidation by the Second Judicial Circuit Court in and for Leon County, Florida. The Florida Department of Financial Services (“Department”) is the court appointed Receiver.

FSIC was a property and casualty insurance company located in Sarasota, Florida. The company was licensed in Florida in 1997 and wrote personal property insurance policies for homeowners, condos, renters, and manufactured homes.

All FSIC policies are cancelled effective 12:01 a.m. on November 1, 2019, unless otherwise terminated prior to that date. Policy holders are encouraged to discuss options with their agents as they are best able to advise them as to their insurance options.

If ‘you’, the reader, have an FSIC policy, please act straight away.

#3 – And ‘didjaknow’ (translation – ‘Did you know’) that November 1, 2019 is Love Your Lawyer Day? (Did anyone notice how large the date reference is in the preceding sentence?) Everybody gets a warm and fuzzy day…even attorneys.

Now, many people are familiar with the one sentence line from Shakespeare’s play Henry VI, Part 2The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.” While that line is (somewhat) funny standing alone, when taken in full context it means that lawyers stand in front of social chaos.4 Were it not for attorneys, many now commonly accepted rights and privileges would at best be sidelined if not foregone altogether. Lawyers add value to individuals, families businesses, and society-in-general. On November 1, then, let us all take one day to appreciate what lawyers actually accomplish both for individual cases and for the greater good.

Approximately 90,000 Florida homeowners who maintained policies with the Florida Specialty Insurance Company will immediately need to replace their policies.

A final note. Several new Florida laws took effect on October 1 2019. That will be the subject of another piece – perhaps the next one.
