Meet Francesca E. Kenney Our Featured Attorney of the Week at Bogin, Munns & Munns.
My job as a criminal defense attorney is to make sure that my clients receive fair, equitable, and just treatment. I view the criminal justice system as emphasizing a “checks and balances” structure, so that a defendant is only punished to the extent that other institutions perform their respective duties properly. It is our job as criminal defense attorneys to work with prosecutors and law enforcement officers and to check each other’s exercise of power – I work against a system that has been in place for decades upon decades and my goal is to ensure that the system protects the defendant from any wrongful accusations, convictions, or sentences.
For as long as I can remember, I have always dreamed of becoming an attorney. As the oldest child in my family, it has always been a passion of mine to argue a point. I grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania and my aunt was the only attorney in our family. I worked with her throughout college, and I was awed by the way she carried herself, the way she ran her law firm, and envied her experiences in a courtroom. I knew that would be me someday.
I was always intrigued by criminal law, but it wasn’t until I attended a very inspiring Sentencing Hearing about six months into my law school career that I became so passionate about the work that criminal defense attorneys do and the impact they have on the defendant’s life, their families, and their loved ones. The criminal justice system is complex. It is difficult to navigate, hard to understand, and even more puzzling when you’ve never been introduced to it before. I have always wanted to use the knowledge and skill that I developed in law school to explain to others what they may not understand.
Law is by far one of the complex written rules of society and practicing law as an attorney is one of the most respected professions in the workplace. I am honored to be a part of this respected community and to me, this is one of my most favorite things about practicing. Every day I wake up knowing that my purpose as an attorney is to help others, and that brings me the utmost satisfaction.
My greatest strength as an attorney is my ability to effectively communicate complex technicalities in the legal field to my clients and their loved ones. Prior to becoming an attorney, I focused my entire legal career in the criminal defense field. If I hadn’t become an attorney, you’d likely find me in a forensic laboratory analyzing fingerprints or crime scenes. When If I am not practicing law, I enjoy spending time with my husband. I am also a kid at heart – my favorite flavor ice cream is cotton candy and I love Disney movies.
