What is it like to balance time between the practice of law and motherhood?

If I said it was easy to balance my time between my career and motherhood, I’d be lying. There are often school events that I cannot attend with my kids, and at the same time, there are networking events for work that I forego to be home in the evenings. Our weeks are busy and the days can be long, but juggling the extra-curriculars, the pick-ups, the drop-offs, the art projects, and the homework assignments is just reality. And when the balls get dropped (and they do from time to time) we rely on the help of good friends and family. Because, it really does take a village.

How does being an attorney help you to be a better mom?

I can say without a doubt, that becoming a mom has made me a better attorney, a better colleague, and a better boss. I find that I am more empathetic, compassionate, and understanding since becoming a mom. I also am better and rolling with the punches and knowing that not everything is going to go as planned. I am also more driven since becoming a mom. Having kids is humbling; they let me know on a daily basis that I do not know everything, and there are different ways to look at a situation. They teach me things all the time. Especially being a trial lawyer, I feel that if I cannot explain my case to my children, then the jury might not understand either.

How does being a mom help you to be a better attorney?

At the same time, my work has made me a better mom. Kids are always watching. I want them to see how hard I work to have a successful career, especially in an industry that has been dominated by men. I want to show them that they can do whatever they set their minds to, as long as they work hard. And, every once in a while my deposition skills come in handy!
