Have you ever had that optimistic feeling you have a secret stash of ‘moolah’ you forgot somewhere? Such as in a long-forgotten bank or investment account? (Sure…it happens all the time to me…) Or, you received a letter from Florida’s Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis that you have that forgotten financial account? Or from a for-hire service?

Well, there is a no-charge available service from the State of Florida called Florida Treasure Hunt. You can access the Hunt. The website will point a ‘hunter’ to the process to search for forgotten financial accounts. 2

Here are some interesting facts about forgotten funds and Florida Treasure Hunt (all from the Hunt’s website): 3

  • One in five Floridians has unclaimed funds from a forgotten financial account
  • Why Search? It only takes 30 seconds.
  • $323 Million paid out to Floridians last year!
  • One in Five chance you have unclaimed property

And…

  • It’s FREE! No cost to reclaim your funds

It is possible you may be contacted by a private search company. Those companies are allowed to assist, and they may charge certain fees, but – again – the Hunt is readily a self-serve process. For information on private search services, their limits, and the allowable fees please visit this webpage.

Have you ever had that optimistic feeling you have a secret stash of ‘moolah’ you forgot somewhere?

This writer has done the Hunt for part of a prior job. It was, indeed, quick and simple. Give it a whirl. You never know what you may find! One final fact in that regard: “There is no statute of limitations on unclaimed property in Florida. Account owners, or their heirs, maintain the right to claim their funds indefinitely.4

So…Tally ho! Happy hunting!
