We all have veterans of the armed forces in our circles. This writer has family, friends, work colleagues, and former students who served. And so do ‘you’.
As Veterans Day – formerly called Armistice Day – approaches on November 11th let us, then, take some time to recognize the efforts and sacrifices of safety, time, and simple comforts of our veterans and their families.
One way to do that is to participate in and promote National Veterans Small Business Week from November 2 – 6, 2020 sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
As described by the SBA:
Each year the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) celebrates, connects, and empowers service members, veterans, National Guard and Reserve members, and military spouses during National Veterans Small Business Week (NVSBW). This year marks the seventh annual NVSBW.
This year’s theme is #VetBiz Resources in Your Local Community which highlights the breadth of free to low-cost entrepreneurial resources that veteran and military entrepreneurs can access right in their neighborhood – from seeking business counseling services from a local SCORE chapter, to visiting the Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) in their area for help formulating a business plan. 1
And the SBA has developed a number of daily programs for NVSBW. 2

Military personnel are trained and accustomed by practice to work in teams. That is no different with their business lives. Just like all entrepreneurs, veterans should avail themselves of a team of supporters – business/tax/real estate attorneys, CPAs, bankers, insurance agents, investment advisors, and real estate brokers to identify a few.

So let us all take the coinciding opportunities of Veterans Day and National Veterans Small Business Week to help build up those in our families and communities who have served. I do not know what you have seen, but during the course of my life I have regularly observed creative and productive leadership by veterans in the business world. Which should be absolutely no surprise. To anyone.
